Alberta Municipalities to Get $1.1B

The Government of Alberta announced Tuesday that municipalities in the province will receive $1.1 billion in federal and provincial funding to build core infrastructure and support transit operating costs.

This measure is meant to create jobs and help the local economy recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was made under the headings of the Alberta Recovery Plan and the federal Safe Restart Agreement. Of the $1.1 billion announced, $500 million will go toward infrastructure projects, $466 million to operating costs, and $14 million to public transit operating costs.

The additional $500 million that will go toward infrastructure boosts current investment levels in this category by almost 30% and is expected to create 2,500 jobs. Projects are expected to start in 2020 or 2021.

Municipalities seeking access to this infrastructure funding should apply to the Municipal Stimulus Program (MSP) by October 1.
